With a little over one month left in the calendar year, the school is bursting with excitement and events in the coming weeks.
Fun lunch will be from Tim Horton's this Wednesday. This week will also see our Grade 9 Farewell in the Gym from 4:00-6:00 on Thursday. 9A and 9B will be going to Sait on Tuesday and Wednesday to participate in the SaitCity Career Exploration. They will select three career areas and simulate the job by completing a specific task. Grade 4 Drama Club will meet in the Foods Room from 3:00-4:00 P.M. on Wednesday. Please contact Mrs. Ross if you have any questions. After a very successful fundraiser for our learning commons, students that sold products have truck bucks to spend. This Friday they will get an opportunity to do so when the food trucks visit Nose Creek School. In addition to spending their earned Truck Bucks, students can bring money to use at the food trucks and will rotate out to them throughout the morning.
This week, a group of Kodiaks are in Japan visiting our sister school. For those parents of younger students, I would encourage you to talk with Ms. Malayko about the experience and the possibility of future trips. Today, April 17th, 6 inventions with their inventors from Grade 8 represented Nose Creek at the Calgary Invention Convention at City Hall. This comes shortly after a strong finish with Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals being earned at the Calgary Youth Science Fair. Way to go Kodiaks! If your child is in grade four and interested in joining the Grade 4 Drama Club, please ensure they see Mrs. Ross for a permission form as the club begins next month! The club will meet after school in the Foods Room on Wednesdays from 3-4pm beginning on May 2. Permission forms are due back to Mrs. Ross on or before April 17! Green Week is coming April 23! Stayed tuned for activities, challenges, prizes and the bake sale information. Thanks, from the Senior Green Team. Despite our most recent fall of snow, spring is almost here and with it our March/ Spring Break! This Thursday and Friday, to accommodate for interviews, there is no school for students. Visit your My CBE account page to book interviews today! Japan Homestay and Biogeosciences Parent MeetingsBoth our Japan Homestay and our first ever grade 9 overnight trip to the Biogeosciences center in Kananaskis are quickly approaching. This Monday the parents of the students going to the Biogeosciences Center will have a meeting in the Learning Commons and this Tuesday those interested in billeting a Japanese Student during our Japanese Homestay are invited to come to the school for an information session.
This Wednesday is Pi Day March 14 - 3.14)! Mathematicians of the world celebrate! Parent Teacher Interviews are next Thursday and Friday with registration opening up this Thursday morning. Visit your CBE Account to book appointments soon! Please remember to drive safely and check for students crossing in the school zones. We continue to work with our students around safe interactions but do understand the area is hectic in the morning. Take an extra moment to park safely and try to ensure students exit the vehicle onto the sidewalk/ side boulevard.
As an educator, there are moments that you talk about long after they pass. I can't help but believe that the time we took approximately 1000 students, parents, and staff members to the hitmen hockey game during anti-bullying week will stand out as one of those times. Thanks in part to a great collaborative effort between our parents and staff, the event went extremely well and was a great opportunity to build Kodiak spirit as well as to spear head conversations around bullying and drawing together as a group. Basketball UpdateIf you have been wanting to see our Kodiak basketball teams in action this season but haven't made t out, this Wednesday may be the ideal date. All four of our teams are in action starting at 4:30. Students are welcome with parent supervision and getting a loud and proud cheering section would be great! Invention Convention is Coming! Our grade 8 students have been working on the Invention Convention and are almost ready to display their hard work. On March 15 from 5:30-7:30 and then during the day on the 16th the gym will morph into a Dragon's Den with students pitching their product ideas and displaying their prototype inventions. Parents and community members are welcome to attend. Parent Teacher InterviewsWe are excited for the opportunity to discuss the achievement of our students with our parents during our next round of Parent-Teacher interviews. These will be occurring during the evening of March 22 and the day of March 23. Information about booking will be coming soon and will be available through the My CBE Account feature found at www.cbe.ab.ca. We can't wait to see you there!
This last weekend our Robotics Club, made up of students from grades 5-9, made the journey to Nose Creek's first competition, with over 50 entrants, we finished at 32, an awesome job! Not only were the students enthusiastic and committed in the months leading up to the event, the parents support was fantastic. Miss. Ng was truly impressed with the team and community. Great job o our Kodiaks and their support system! Be Brave! This week we are thinking pink at Nose Creek. Bullying is a major issue in not only schools but society and we are raising awareness within our school and are gladly partnering with Calgary Hitmen by going to their "Be Brave" hockey game. With close to 1000 Kodiak's, parents, and staff members going, we are excited. While we get out in the community though,it is important to make sure that we reflect on why the Hitmen are hosting the event. We must all be active participants in our communities, and not just on Pink Shirt Day but every day. I would encourage everyone to not let others suffer alone. We are a sea of 1000 pink shirts descending on the Saddledome. That is 1000 bodies that can work together to make our Nose Creek community, our community of Coventry Hills, and every community that we interact with a safer and supported place. While we participate in our fun themed days (I can't wait to wear my hat for $1 on Wednesday!), let's keep in site the purpose. Bullying stops here. Not with our neighbors but with us. As we look to finish off the second month of 2018, we are extremely thankful to our parent council for funding a variety of physical literacy resources for our classrooms. These include under-table bikes, balance cushions, resistance bands, and more! As a staff we continue to feel fortunate and amazingly supported by our parents. While report cards just went home, we are already looking to the 2018-2019 year for term planning. We have gathered data about programs that students are interested in and will be looking at schedules and making sure that there is something for everyone here at Nose Creek!
Speaking of snow, please ensure that students are dressed for the weather as the temperature will continue its up and down cycle for a while longer. Lower grade students will go out for recess when weather permits so having winter clothing is a necessity. The Start of Term 2This week sees the start of our second term of complementary courses. We are excited to offer a wide range of programs to satisfy a multitude of interests and our teachers and students are excited to see what the second half of the year brings. With the first term drawing to a close, report cards will be coming home this Friday! Cardboard Floats, Balls Bounce, Another Week PassesThis past week we sent two teams to the Cardboard Boat Races. With one team blazing across the pool and the other making it a few feet, the engineering challenge was a massive success and tons of fun. Great job to our team that showed outstanding Kodiak Spirit.
We also hosted the senior Kodiak Classic Basketball Tournament. Close games and competition ran rampant with our senior boys and girls team representing us extremely well. |
